Ann Coulter - Bad for Conservatives

Jason Elvington

Issue date: 11/16/07 Section: News and Opinion

Ann Coulter is the epitome, in many liberals' eyes, of conservatism in the United States. Pro-life, anti-gay marriage, pro-free market, and very much outspoken- could conservatives ask for a better voice? Yes. As conservatives we can and should ask for someone else other than Ann Coulter.

Ann Coulter has brought attention to the conservative movement by being outspoken and willing to stand up for what is right. She stood up to Matt Lauer as he spun stories, essentially lied, and tried to belittle Ann in an interview on The Today Show. Her stirring up controversy by taking on enemies of American morality made conservatives, most if not all of us, happy and glad that we have someone as outspoken, honest, and courageous as she is on our side. Unfortunately the tide has turned on Ann.

Ann is now making personal attacks to those she disagrees with on a regular basis. She notes how immoral and godless liberals have become. What she does not realize is how outrageous she is becoming. She does not seem to understand that she is hurting the conservative movement by acting like a bully.

As a member of the religious right I can no longer stand how much she is degrading our movement. She does not act with respect or love, but with arrogance and hate. As much as I have cheered her on and wished that she could be more out-spoken, I now find myself wishing that she would just shut-up.

Her attacks on John Edwards were the beginning of the end in my eyes. Making homosexuals slurs in my opinion is callous and there was no call for the personal attack on Edwards using homosexual slurs. Instead of showing her dislike for Edwards by calling him names, she should have just stated why she disliked him. While she would not have received the media coverage that she did, she could have acted with respect. What is more important, publicity or respect? For Ann, the answer seems to be publicity.

Since that time I have seen her a few times in television appearances on the news. When she appears, I see and hear how she vehemently hates the opposition. Her articles also demonstrate this. The most recent example of her attacking those with whom she disagrees involves the likes of Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson - two Republican presidential candidates.

I read an article she wrote about Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson that was posted on her website. She despises these two men. The title of the article was "Fred Sawyer and Huckabee Finn." She states in the article that conservatives that drift towards these two men are misguided. While she does have valid points (like Huckabee is not the strongest candidate on border security and Thompson has had some liberal positions in the past), the name calling attack in the title and article itself is completely unnecessary and pointless.
